  Gollum (Smeagol) -one of the river folk Hobbit-kind when he first acquires The Ring, over 560 years later he has become a creature known as Gollum, distorted, nasty, full of lies and deceit. Gollum was eventually captured and brought to Barad-dur where he was questioned and tortured. Sauron allowed Gollum to escape because he wanted Gollum to lead him to the one who bore the Ring. He is the guide to Mordor for Frodo and Sam.
  Treebeard --the oldest of the Ents, the great shepherds of the forests who resembled the trees they guarded. He once roamed far and wide through the woods of Middle-earth, but by the end of the Third Age he and the other Ents dwelled in Fangorn Forest. He he led the Ents to war against Saruman.
  Shelob -the giant evil spider that captures Frodo and is defeated by Sam. Offspring of Ungoliant. At the end of the Third Age, Shelob was the only one of Ungoliant's offspring left in the world.
  The Balrog -defeated by Gandalf in the mines of Moria, belonged to the order of the Maiar-the servants of the Valar. Originally spirit of fire that was corrupted by Morgoth.
  Oliphaunt -Large beasts resembling elephants, used in battle by the Haradium from the south who put houses and towers on their backs to carry them. Grey with trunks and tusks and big flapping ears, they were much larger than the elephants of today. Oliphaunts came from Harad, in the far south of Middle-earth.
  Fell Beast -winged steeds of The Nazgûl, huge, larger than any bird, with great wingspans.
  Horses -used by the peoples of Middle Earth.
  Shadowfax -greatest of all horses at the end of the Third Age; steed of Gandalf. Chief of the magnificent breed of horses known as the mearas. The mearas were descended from Felarof, a wild horse tamed by Eorl, the first King of Rohan.
  Wargs -riden by Orcs for specialized attacks, fierce canine predators, most feared and deadly type of wolves.
  Eagles -Gwaihir had keen eyesight and was the swiftest of the Great Eagles, who come to the aid of the people at the Battle of Pelennor fields by attacking the Fell Beasts.
  Watcher in the Water -water-dwelling creature outside Moria, had tentacles that were pale green and luminous and had gripping fingers at the ends. Lived outside the West-gate of Moria in a lake that had been formed by the damming of Sirannon, the Gate-stream.
  Cave-troll -A race of Trolls found in caverns and dark places. The only definite mention of a Cave-troll was during the Fellowship's struggle to escape Moria. The Cave-troll they encountered was enormous, with a skin of dark green scales, and flat, toeless feet.
